Quite often lenses are described as having a macro function but I'd like to know what this actually does. My 300mm F4 has a macro function but according to the instructions it says I have to put it into MF and set the focus to macro then move backwards and forwards to get the subject in focus, very strange.
I had previosly thought it just meant closer than normal focussing (from the Sigma 70-300 I had) but something tells me now that it's probably more than that.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Cheers all.

This explains it better than I can
Good try Keith. That info explains what it does on P&S and Super-zoom cameras.
I'm trying to find out what the macro function on an SLR lens actually does. My theory at present is that aside from focussing closer it actually magnifies the subject so it appears larger than if viewed through a lens without a macro feature.
I don't think my lens does either so why Canon describe it has having a macro feature is beyond me.
Surely one of the BF gurus can pitch in, please!
