I was curious about this for a long time.....
SD cards are used in many of the not so pro DSLRs.
CF cards are used in the top of the line models.
Many people consider CF cards superior to SD cards......
Why? If you compare a SD card with a CF card with the same capacity and write/read speed there shouldn't really be any difference?
Just that you read all the time that folks bend pins in the CF slot, something that can't happen with SD cards.........

P.S. I am aware that CF cards are available with higher speed ratings and larger capacities than SD cards.....
I think a lot of it has to do with how the market has developed. The entry level cameras tend to use SD and the professional CF.
CF cards were the first to be introduced and initially they were fairly expensive - especially the high capacity and the related microdrive ones. However as it was only the professionals who could afford to buy DSLR's it wasn't an issue for the majority of us.
As the prices of DSLR's begun to fall the pro's and semi-pro's who had invested in CF cards weren't interested in switching over to the newer SD card. However at the entry/amateur level SD cards started to be introduced on the newer non pro cameras.
CF cards and micro-drive are old technology and in my experience not as reliable as SD cards. With SD cards I can just take the card out and plug it straight into the PC. I don't need to use an external card reader or install any drivers. I've yet to have a SD card fail on me but I've had 3 CF cards fail.
The sooner the semi-pro cameras change over the better. Unfortunately within a hyper critical market where everything is analysed to the nth degree I fear that neither Canon or Nikon will drop the CF card in case their latest semi-pro offering is dismissed as being a bit amateurish.

I must say that I only know SD cards, and I did have one that actually failed on me, a 1GB Ultra II. The photos did not get lost, but it locked itself irreversibly at some point while we transferred pictures to a computer. So that card no longer allowed to delete the pictures and I could no longer add others to the card which was not full at all.
