If you want a good starter camera for bird photography that is reasonably priced, I'd recommend a "super-zoom" type of camera (Canon S5, Olympus SP-570, Panasonic FZ-28, etc). If you do a search on this forum for "super-zoom", or just browse the Panasonic, Canon or Olympus threads, you should find plenty of postings on this topic.
If you buy a DSLR like the D40, which you mentioned, you will have to spend MAJOR bucks for a high-magnification lens, which is an absolute requirement for bird photography. A super-zoom will give that to you in a reasonably-priced package. You can always move on to a DSLR and a large zoom lens later.

What about the Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm lens?
I have the point and shoot cameras (i have a Lumix 6X zoom from Panasonic). Any suggestions?
I figure that the hi-tech cameras are more professional and the pics come out better, is that true?
