Camera bag to fit 40D,100-400mm,hood ready to shoot

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a shoulder style bag similar to the Canon 200DG Digital Camera Gadget Bag but with enough room for my Canon 40D with 100-400mm attached with the hood ready to shoot. A little more bag length for a 1.4x TC attached would help as well. I would like to lay the camera flat on the bottom of the bag.

I know there are some great bags out there that may support this setup like a sling bag or holster bag but I'm looking for the shoulder style bag for a reason.

I think this would require a bag width of about 14 inches? (40D/100-400mm/hood facing out ready to shoot). I did see Canon has a bag called the 10EG. It's 17.6 x 15.2 x 8 inches. This sounds like it should be more than enough if it's still out there.

If anyone has found a good shoulder bag for this purpose I would love to hear what your using.

Thanks!

Have you thought of using the lens case as a holster ?

I have been doing this for a 70-200 2.8 with 2x. I put a broad strap on the case, rather than the standard and slung that over my shoulder so it hangs left side of my chest. The whole set up drops in and lifts out with the hood on, ready to shoot. I adjust the two straps to divide the weight evenly. Incidentally I put the case strap round the opposite shoulder for security - something about the shape of my shoulders, things hung on the same side just slip off.

This allows me to carry easily to hand at the same time as carrying a full rucksack when backpacking. I can also ride a bike with the camera secure and ready to hand. Found this out after missing a stonechat because the camera was in my rucksack ! I need to think about which order to put things on in (holster first, rucksack next, camera last). There is a belt loop on the holster but I don't use that - I am carrying it much higher than waist height for ease of walking.

As it so happens I got a 300 F4 and last night I set the rig up to carry in the same way (with a 1.4x). Very comfortable - and lighter than the zoom :-).

Mike.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the great post. Unfortunately I can't use a slingbag, backback, holster, or carry the camera other ways etc.. because of balance problems. There's a chance I would loose my footing and take a fall crushing the bag and the contents.

I've been moving my camera and tripod with a light weight hand cart. I can place the Canon bag onto the base of the hand card and secure it with a few bungee cords. I lay the camera down flat on the bottom of the bag.

It's been a pain since every time I move the cart I have to remove the lens hood and place the lens cap and back the camera back in the bag. Roll the cart and bag and then take out everything and get it ready to shoot again.

I've been looking for something like the Canon bag where I can lay the camera flat with everything ready to shoot (the lens hood ready to shoot as well)

Someone mentioned a Crumpler Bag called The Brazillion Dollar Home. It seems to be a great bag.

I'm curious if anyone else out there has found they use for the same purpose.

Thanks again Mike!
