Brand Loyalty

One of the things that I've noticed since buying a dSLR and browsing camera forums is the EXTREME brand loyalty.

There is one chap on a forum who has as his signature "owning a nikon camera doesn't make you a photographer it makes you a nikon owner". I've seen Nikon owners rate canon cameras as zero just for the hell of it and vice versa.

And you have Sony owners getting furious over bias on dpreview.

and there are one or two people on this forum (which thankfully is spared most of the mindless drivel) whose bias ,even if they agree with me, means I'd ignore anything they say.

Now why? As a Nikon owner do I feel threatend by the 50d? no! I have friends who are canon owners and if they get a nice new camera great.

to me competition is good it forces the manufacturers to up their game

what are these people sssoo frightened of.

I know exactly what you mean, intense brand loyalty like this just leaves people looking silly. I'm loyal to Canon (with money invested in lenses I couldn't afford not to be) but not to the degree that leaves me slagging off all the other brands. Personally I'm pleased to see Nikon (and the other manufacturers) producing good cameras and lenses, as you say competition can only be good for the consumer. In my experience all of the current crop of DSLRs are capable of producing great images. Image quality is effected more by the lens on the front and even more so by the user behind.

All that said extreme brand loyalty can make for some very entertaining reading...

Having made a mistake ? Imagine having to admit that - to themselves ! to the other half !!

You see the same thing with cars, even tractors.

It is silly as there is no right answer on which brand to buy. For tractors I choose by the local support. Every brand has it's good and bad points, but what you really want to know is that if you have a problem during harvest at 17.01 on a Friday evening with rain looming the mechanic will be there super pronto, will really know what he is doing and won't have to wait forever for the right parts.

Bit different from consumer cameras.

Oh, and tractors have standard connections to the implements, so you aren't locked in by your lens investment.

Mike.
