£1500 to spend what combination is best?



Hi all

I am thinking of making the leap from digiscoping to Digital SLR+ lens. I have a total budget of £1500. Any recommendations for a camera + lens in that price range? I was thinking about the new sigma 150 - 500m lens and perhaps a Canon 40D or equivalent.

Any advice for a complete novice appreciated!


Hi and welcome to BirdForum from all the staff.

Many will have different opinions on this one but personally I'd go for a 40D and a Canon 400 f5.6 lens. It will come in enough under budget to cover a couple of spare batteries and some memory (and perhaps a tripod).

What sort of distance away are you with these shots? Would an extra 100mm over the images you show on a 500mm zoom mean a big difference in how far away from the subject you can be and still get a decent image?
